Spring Break Bookings Skyrocket As Americans Flock To Warm Weather Destinations

Allianz Partners Reveals 2022’s Top Spring Break Destinations: Florida Reigns Domestically with Five Top 10 Cities, and Mexico Sweeps Top Three International Destinations

RICHMOND, VA, March 7, 2022 – Travel insurance and assistance provider Allianz Partners has completed its annual review of the top 10 Spring Break Destinations and found that Spring Break bookings for 2022 have increased by a staggering 134% over 2021 bookings. Americans are planning trips to warm weather destinations in the U.S., Mexico and other international hot spots for the popular travel season. Domestically, the sun is shining on U.S. cities in the south and west this spring as travelers make plans to get away to five Florida cities as well as Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles among the top destinations. Mexico occupies the top three international destinations with sun worshippers selecting island and beach getaways for their winter respite.

Allianz Partners analyzed flight itineraries of 4.1 million* travelers’ trips of five to eight days in length for travel planned between Feb. 18 and Apr. 18, 2022. The survey found that, for the sixth year in a row, Orlando remains the most popular domestic destination among Americans, perhaps fueled in part by Disney World® Resort’s 50th Anniversary season. Four other favorite Florida cities also made the top 10 list including: Fort Lauderdale (#5), Miami (#7), Fort Myers (#8) and Tampa (#10). Access to beaches is always appealing, but big cities continue to draw visitors as evidenced by the exponential number of trips planned to major metro markets like New York City, which is up by nearly 600% over last year and Los Angeles, up by almost 300% over last year. New York and Los Angeles knocked perennial favorites Denver and Honolulu off of this year’s top 10 list.

The Allianz Partners’ survey revealed that 81% of travelers taking Spring Break trips will be traveling within the continental U.S. this year, primarily on a shorter getaway of five days. In contrast, international travelers are booking longer trips of up to eight days to more-fully immerse themselves in the culture of their selected location.

While travel to international destinations is still facing entry restrictions, demand is on the rise as airlines restore routes and travelers seek out genuine experiences following up to two years of virtual vacations and bucket list trip planning. Mexico holds the reins on the top three spots for the fourth consecutive year as the Spring Break favorite dominates with Cancun (#1), San Jose Del Cabo (#2), and Puerto Vallarta (#3) atop the Top 10 International list. Growing consumer confidence and pent-up desire are spurring the global travel trend with island destinations from the Dominican Republic (#4) and across the Caribbean anticipating an influx of American visitors. Commemorative events surrounding the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee also helped return London (#10) to this year’s roster of international hot spots.

“Americans are planning their revenge travel trips for the 2022 Spring Break season as travel roars back into action,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications for Allianz Partners USA. “Our survey results validate the appeal of lively city adventures in New York City, beach and adventure in Florida and the southwest, while long-favored international locales like Mexico and the Caribbean are poised to welcome travelers longing for a memorable escape.”

In March 2021, Allianz Partners announced enhancements** to many of its travel insurance products in most states through an Epidemic Coverage Endorsement. Products that include this endorsement may provide coverage to customers who become ill with COVID-19 or a future epidemic, are individually ordered to quarantine, or are denied boarding due to a suspected illness. These products may also cover emergency medical care and transportation or provide reimbursement for change fees and loyalty points deposit fees if the customer becomes ill with an epidemic disease. Availability of the Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, and specific covered reasons under that endorsement, varies by product and by state. See your plan for details.

*Methodology: The data of U.S. travelers’ 2022 Spring Break plans was gathered by analyzing the number of travelers that went through the online booking process of airfare and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel to generate itineraries for roundtrip flights from US airports during Spring Break season (2/18/2022 to 4/18/2022) for trips between 5-8 days in length. In comparison to last year’s bookings for the same period (1,762,994 travelers), 2022 reflects a 134% increase in traveler counts.
